Lorenzo Maitani and Associates, The Boy Jesus Among the Doctors

First half of the 14th century
Marble relief
Detail from the west façade of Orvieto Cathedral

Although scripture says only that the boy's "wisdom and his answers" astonished the scripture scholars in the Temple, traditional iconography presents him as their teacher, in this case seated above them and pointing to Heaven with his right hand. It is common for him to hold a book or scroll in his left hand, but this relief has the hand simply resting on his thigh.

This scene is part of the fifth register in the relief, which is on the inside right pillar of the cathedral's façade.

Like most of the images of this episode that I have examined, the relief does not emphasize the "astonishment" that scripture ascribes to the scholars.
